Sapphire-vented Puffleg (Eriocnemis luciani)

A few years ago I went on a birding/photography trip to Ecuador and one of the places which we visited was the Yanacocha reserve, which is in the Andes north of the capital Quito. This reserve is a great place to see and photograph hummingbirds. One of the species encountered there was this Sapphire-vented Puffleg (Eriocnemis luciani). This beautiful hummingbird only occurs in south-western Colombia and western Ecuador. Perhaps I should point out that I never use flash when photographing hummingbirds, as I feel the effect of flash results in a false and ‘un-lifelike’ image. Admittedly, this doesn’t make things any easier, but I prefer the results!

Lovely bird portrait. Great composition too. Rule of thirds, bird looking into the frame, awesome shallow depth-of-field. Blistering colour! Great image.
