Steller’s Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus)

One of the largest species of eagle in the world, the Steller’s Sea-eagle (Haliaeetus pelagicus) is a very impressive creature. I went to Japan in early January one year and these huge eagles were very easy to find along the coast of Hokkaido, the most northerly of the main Japanese islands. This photo was taken in a small fishing port where the eagles had congregated, waiting to steal a fish from the incoming fishing boats.
