Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri)

Whilst out for a walk in the Bavarian woods today, we saw lots of Eurasian Jays busily collecting acorns. This reminded me of a series of photos that I took a few years back whilst I was visiting Seattle, in Washington State, USA. In a local park, we came across a Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stellari) which was doing the same thing! Here you can see the jay proudly grasping the acorn…

Steller’s Jays vary in appearance throughout their range in North America. This individual is of the Pacific race stelleri which does not show the white facial markings which are so distinctive on Steller’s Jays that you can see inland from the Rocky mountains in Canada, for example.
