Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera)

Whilst travelling in Ecuador we visited the Yanacocha reserve, near Quito, which is a good place to look for the incredible Sword-billed Hummingbird (Ensifera ensifera). Not surprisingly, this bird has the longest bill of any hummingbird! In fact, it’s bill is so long that it has to perch with it’s head pointed slightly upwards to stop it from falling forwards! This long bill makes the bird tricky to photograph, as it can be hard to ‘fit everything in the frame’, but I managed it with the individual pictured here.
