Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Rupicola peruvianus, cotinga, bird, ecuador

Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus)

The oddly-named Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is a member of one of my favourite bird families, the Cotingas. Andean Cock-of-the-rocks live in the Andean cloud forests of South America and the males engage in elaborate courting displays, known as leks. Watching several male cock-of-the-rocks at their lekking site is a wonderful experience and the noise is pretty amazing too, as they make loud squealing sounds reminiscent of excited pigs!

The particular lekking site where I took the above photo was in Ecuador.
