Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius)

This is a very old photograph, but it’s of what must be the most amazing creature that I’ve ever seen.

I photographed this wild Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) whilst visiting the aptly named Cassowary House, near Cairns in Australia. This has to be one of the most reliable places to see wild Southern Cassowaries which come to feed on kitchen scraps! I vividly remember sitting in quiet anticipation on the veranda and then hardly believing my eyes as suddenly, out of the rainforest, walked a living dinosaur! Unbelievable! Now, only to go back there with a better camera….

One of my most awesome experiences in cairns was driving along an undeveloped road and having to stop for a mummy cassowary with two smaller brownish red babies following behind. I was so in awe I forgot to get a photo!
