Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps)

This photo of a Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps) is one of the few that I’ve ever taken whilst paddling about in a canoe. I was paddling around Union bay in Seattle, Washington state, USA, hoping that I wasn’t going to capsize along with a very expensive camera lens! The Pied-billed Grebes were very entertaining-you could approach them quite closely, but if you got just that little bit too close then the grebe would submerge vertically in a seemingly effortless manner, reminiscent of a submarine periscope being retracted!
