Crested Tit, Lophophanes cristatus, tit, bird, italy

Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus)

Whilst walking up a forested mountain-side in South Tyrol, Italy, I spotted this Crested Tit (Lophophanes cristatus) calling. The bird then promptly appeared to disappear! I realised that I had stumbled upon an active nest site and that the birds were nesting in a hole near to the top of a broken tree stump, into which this bird had ‘disappeared’. Each time that the Crested Tit left the nest hole, it would firstly sit on the same branch and call for a few moments, giving me the chance to take this photo!
