Red-crowned Crane (Grus japonensis)

When I visited Japan, our first port of call was the Tsurui Ito Tancho Sanctuary, near Kushiro on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. We were there in early January-winter being the best time to see the endangered Red-crowned Cranes (Grus japonensis) which gather at the feeding stations there. In this photo you can see a group of cranes ‘dancing’ which makes for an impressive site on a cold winter’s day!
